Universal health coverage key to social stability: WHO official

BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), said Thursday that providing universal health coverage is key to maintaining social harmony and stability.

Chan made the remarks at a publishing ceremony for WHO's 2013 World Health Report, adding that she hopes China can play a bigger role in encouraging universal health coverage.

The report focused on the importance of research in advancing progress towards universal health coverage.

"China, together with the international community, is willing to spare unremitting efforts to ensure that everyone has access to health services and enjoy the right to be healthy," said Chen Zhu, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the 12th National People's Congress.

Li Bin, head of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, said it is important for governments, international organizations and research institutes to make strong joint efforts to ensure universal access to health care services.
