Thailand Election Commission Calls for Delay in Vote

Thailand's election commission has requested the indefinite postponement of an early vote, which had been called for by Prime Minister Yinglu
ck Shinawatra as a way out of the country's political crisis, which turned violent again Thursday.

In a statement, the commission cited a lack of peace between the government and protesters, who for weeks have demanded that Prime Minister Yingluck step down and hand power to an unelected council.

Syria Chemical Arsenal Inspection Could Start Tuesday

International experts will begin inspecting Syria's chemical arsenal by Tuesday under a plan set to be approved by the world's top chemical weapons monitoring group.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons will vote late Friday on the draft resolution, which calls for inspections within 30 days at all chemical weapons sites declared by Syria's government.

JAKARTA — In Indonesia, organizers of the “Miss World” beauty pageant have bowed to pressure from Islamic hardliners and moved the event to the Hindu-majority island Bali. But in the country’s capital, Muslim women from across the globe took to the catwalk to compete in a Miss World of their own.
 At Miss Muslimah 2013, glamorous, floor-length hijabs - not bikinis - are the official attire on the catwalk.
 The pageant is touted as ‘Islam’s answer to Miss World’ and included contestants from as far as Iran and Nigeria.

US Senator McCain Attacks Putin in Russian Website Op-ed

MOSCOW — U.S. Senator John McCain on Thursday accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of allying himself with tyrants and ruling through violence and repression, in a scathing retort to a New York Times editorial by Putin earlier this month.
 
 In an editorial published on news website Pravda.ru, McCain criticized the Russian leader's policies at home and in Syria, where Putin has repeatedly protected President Bashar al-Assad.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says the United States and its allies are not seeking to "take over" Syria’s civil war by carrying out an anticipated American-led air strike to stop President Bashar al-Assad's regime from using poison gas again.

But he said the alleged chemical attack on August 21 that killed more than 1,400 people - including 426 children - in areas outside Damascus populated by opposition supporters had crossed an “international, global red line.”

Britain's Andrew Cayley issued a statement Monday that he was stepping down as co-international prosecutor due to personal reasons. Cayley was appointed to the post in 2009.

S. Korean Parliament OKs Arrest of Lawmaker on Rebellion Charges

South Korean lawmakers have voted to allow the arrest of a colleague accused of conspiring to stage a rebellion in support of North Korea.

Seoul's National Assembly overwhelmingly voted Wednesday to waive the parliamentary immunity of Representative Lee Seok-ki of the Unified Progressive Party, a minor, leftist party that holds six of 298 seats in parliament.

Abe: Fukushima Nuclear Leaks Won't Threaten Olympic Bid

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says ongoing radioactive leaks at the Fukushima nuclear power plant should not threaten Japan's bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games.

Abe, who has been a stedfast supporter of nuclear power, made his comments on Wednesday, before leaving for the G20 summit in Russia. He told reporters he will then travel to Argentina to tell the International Olympic Committee the problem will be completely resolved in seven years.

Chinese Police Say Boy Had Eyes Gouged Out By Aunt

Chinese state media said a six-year-old boy who had his eyes gouged out last month was likely attacked by his aunt, who later committed suicide.

Police believe Zhang Huiying attacked Guo Bin on August 24 while he was playing in a field in rural Shanxi province, where his parents work as farmers.
