British Foreign Secretary William Hague is in Mali for meetings with the country's president, prime minister and foreign minister.
Hague arrived Monday in the West African country, where Malian, French and African forces have been battling to oust Islamic militants who seized control of the north.
He is also due to meet with the commander of the African-led force and the deputy commander of a European mission to train Malian troops.
Meanwhile, the head of France's joint chiefs of staff says it is "probable" that top commander of al-Qaida's North African branch was killed in northern Mali.
Admiral Edouard Guillaud said the killing of Abdelhamid Abou Zeid cannot be confirmed because his body has not been recovered.
Chad reported the death earlier, saying its forces had killed the al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb commander, as well as Mokhtar Belmokhtar, the mastermind of the deadly siege at an Algerian gas plant earlier this year.
